You like different photos for different reasons. Sports Illustrated wants the crew of photogs to shoot the Games, but also a bit of Rio, described in the NYT as launching a huge, raucous party in the midst of a gritty environment. True enough. The Brazilian people are amazing, warm hearted and enthusiastic, and the city of Rio has the feel of an old wall with peeling paint. Beautiful, but showing the wear.
Made the above after leaving weightlifting the other night. Quick snap on the street. Fun to do, though I admit I declined the offer of a glass of schnapps from the lady vendor. No real assignment, just an observance.
The below is on assignment, but also happenstance. I love the fencers, who are all at once athletic, and seemingly ungainly. It is perhaps my basic unfamiliarity with the sport that contributes to the fascination I had shooting it.
For the technically minded, all the above were shot with D5 cameras at various ISO ratings. The amazing technology we have now enables switching modes, styles and techniques on the fly.
